Fine Art Landscape Photography

In the early days of photography, landscapes were popular among photographers. Not only was the genre familiar, being a favorite subject of painters, it was also easier than shooting live subjects due to the long exposure times required. Today's fine art landscape photography has grown from these practical origins. Even though modern cameras can take a high quality image in a fraction of a second, landscapes continue to be popular for the same reasons they were popular paintings. These images may invoke memories of somewhere we have been or tease us with a view of somewhere we would like to go. ALandscape photographs can allow us to marvel at nature or tug at our emotions. Photography has also given rise to a sub-genre that was not terribly common in western painting: black and white landscapes.

Black and White Landscapes

The earliest cameras only took black and white images. Even after color film was developed, many photographers (and artists in other media) had noticed that the limited palette could be used to create powerful imagery. Black and white landscapes, for example, reinforce the fact that you are not seeing the real landscape but a captured image because the natural colors are missing. The black and white can be used to create an amazing amount of tension and visual interest.
