Barbara Trombley
Born in Detroit in 1950, Barbara Trombley grew up drawing, painting and observing. She loved color, people and each day. Her life was influence by cartoons, urban innovation and the softness of nature. Today, Barbara is an artist, color designer and business owner.
In 1982, she created a handmade greeting card line called Northern Lights Cards that shipped worldwide. In 1991, The Art Glittering System was launched with a collection of fine art quality glitter colors that has grown to include over 400 ultrafine, microfine polyester and vintage glass glitter colors. In 2007, she created Elements Earth Textures, a line of aromatic surface embellishments for artists and crafters.
As a young artist, her first commissioned piece at age 15 was to draw a portrait of a 96 year old woman. During high school, she studied under artist Ruby Glick, wife of master potter John Glick. After high school, Barbara went to Cottey College, a private women’s college in Missouri. There she studied painting and art history from working artist and jeweler Linda Williams, pottery from Bob Williams and raku kiln building from master Paul Soldner. In 1970, she continued her fine art education at Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, now the Center for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design, behind the Detroit Institute of Arts. At Arts and Crafts, she studied under working artists: watercolors from Richard Jersey, pottery from Gordan Orear (who was influenced by John Foster and Sarkis), architect Marcos Nobili, and enjoyed the company of fellow artists: Jay MacNeil, Bob Beilot, Wendy Midener Froud, Guy Summertree Veryzer, Mark Reed, Windy Snyder, Sylvia Majewska, Diane Stachel, Pearl Ollie, Alice Niemiec, Carol Mead Wright, Linda Palazzolo and Jim Kaminski.
Barbara’s art is diverse in subject matter, style and medium. A different experience awaits you with each piece.
Whimsical Worlds: Rocks that float, objects that confound the eye, structures that defy gravity, and of humorous little guys and gadgets that connect in imaginary ways in imaginary places. It is said these pieces are Rube Goldberg-esque. Each drawing is meant to delight and bring humor. They are about the question of balance and making sense of our every day lives.
Florals: Large graphic flowers and painterly watercolor roadsides
Abstracts: Graphics, color, texture, looseness and spontaneity
Murals: Lacquer paintings of the universe beyond telescopes.
Line Drawings: Cartoonish, corny fun or spiritually moving
Barbara works in various media: watercolor on rag paper, ceramic tile, wood, clay wire, oil, gold leaf, ink, egg tempera, pencil, glitter, lacquer, charcoal, glass or a combination. She believes the pursuit of authentic art from the heart.
